Networking made easier through Routers and Switches

Rapid increase in data and its sharing needs have given rise to networking technologies and related concepts. Computers can be connected through networking that assist in sharing the resources with ease.

These days the World can’t be imagined without e-mails, online content, e-news, blogs or chatting services and there are certain ways through which this information can be shared over internet. 

Amongst numerous networking options, two of them are Routing and Switching. Cisco is one of the leading vendors manufacturing Routers and Switches with 70% contribution in the respective field. Let’s get an insight into the concepts of Routing and Switching.


Router is a device that establishes connection between two or more networks, usually LAN or WAN, located at different physical locations. It carries data packets over a network using headers by selecting the best path from the table.

3 Level Hierarchy of Cisco Routers 

>> Access Level/Layer
>> Distribution Level/Layer
>> Core Level/Layer

Router Classification 

Fixed Routers: These routers do not have any slot and they are non-upgradable. Fixed Routers cannot add Ethernet or serial ports. Access Routers fall under Fixed Router category. 

Modular Routers: These routers have numerous slots available depending upon the series of the router. Modular Routers are upgradable and can remove or add interfaces according to the requirements. 


Switches help to filter and forward packets among LAN segments connected through network and operates at the data link and network layer of OSI model. Switches are helpful in increasing network's performance and reliability. 

Basic Operation of Switches 

>> Analyzing data packets
>> Checking receiver’s address

Switching Technologies

Cut-through Switching: This type of Switching begins to forward the packets as soon as the destination address is received. But, this creates errors, as this technology doesn’t wait for the entire packet to be transferred. 

Store-and-forward Switching: This type of Switching waits till the entire packet arrives before it is forwarded. The entire packet is saved in memory which is followed by checking destination address, source address, and CRC. 

Having deep knowledge about Routing and Switching can be beneficial for Network Engineers and a formal training can help to reach the desired destination.
